Although this recipe has been around for ages, it was recently brought back to life and made famous by Hailey Bieber's pizza toast recipe that went viral on TikTok. Thank you, internet. 😊

I like to serve pizza toast on the side with my penne Napoli or baked pasta.

It's a lot quicker than making regular pizza but it tastes just as delicious.

PIZZA ON SOURDOUGH BREAD

I love making this pizza on sourdough bread for a healthier mealtime option, but you can use your favorite bread.

It's simple, delicious, and sure to become a family favorite.

💰 WHY IS THIS RECIPE BUDGET-FRIENDLY?

💸 1. Uses basic, everyday ingredients

It’s made with pantry staples like bread, cheese, and tomato sauce, all of which are inexpensive and often already in your kitchen. No fancy ingredients required!

💸 2. You only need a little of each topping

You can stretch a small amount of cheese, a few veggie slices, or a bit of ham or leftover chicken across multiple toasts—no need to buy large quantities like you would for a full pizza.

💸 4. No special equipment or dough needed

No pizza stone, oven preheat, or yeast-based dough required. Just pop it under the grill, or air fryer. It's fast, cheap, and energy-saving.

👩🏼‍🍳 HOW TO MAKE PIZZA TOASTS

Step 1: Toast the Bread Slices

Step one: toast the bread.

Step 1: Toast the bread slices.

You can use a toaster or the oven – whichever fits your preference. Aim for a golden brown color with a slight crunch, providing the ideal base for your pizza toast.

Step two: Spread the pizza sauce over the bread.

Step 2: Spread the Pizza Sauce.

Once your bread slices are toasted, generously spread your pizza sauce over each one.

Step three: Add the shredded cheese.

Step 3: Add Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

What's a pizza without cheese? Sprinkle shredded mozzarella over the sauced-up bread slices.

Step 4: Customize it with your favorite toppings or leave it Margherita Style.

Get creative! Add your favorite pizza toppings, whether it's colorful cherry tomatoes, fragrant fresh basil, or any other ingredient that tickles your taste buds. You can tailor your pizza toast to suit everyone's preferences.

Step 5: Bake

Place your pizza toast in the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Keep an eye on them to avoid overcooking – we aim for a crispy base and gooey toppings.

Watch the Oven Closely:

Keep a close eye on your pizza toasts in the oven. They can go from perfectly melted to burnt fairly quickly. Oven temperatures may vary, so be attentive during the baking process.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy!

Once your pizza toasts are out of the oven, let them cool for a minute before slicing. The crispy texture and gooey cheese are at their peak right out of the oven. The aroma alone will have your family and friends gathering around. Serve with a side of extra homemade pizza sauce for dipping, and watch these disappear in no time.

TIPS AND TRICKS

1. Preheat Your Oven:

  • Ensure your oven is fully preheated before placing the pizza toasts inside. This helps achieve that perfect crispy texture on the bread.

2. Toast Bread First:

  • Toasting the bread slices slightly before adding toppings helps prevent sogginess. It creates a sturdy base that can hold the sauce, cheese, and toppings without becoming mushy.

3. Controlled Cheese Amount:

  • While it's tempting to load up on cheese, use a controlled amount to avoid overwhelming the pizza toast. A moderate layer ensures even melting and a gooey, delicious result.

4. Even Toppings Distribution:

  • Distribute your toppings evenly to ensure each bite has a balanced mix of flavors. This also helps with cooking.

5. Quick Melting Cheese:

  • If you want that perfectly melted and bubbly cheese, consider using pre-shredded mozzarella or shredding your cheese finely. This helps it melt quickly and evenly.

6. Fresh Herbs as a Finishing Touch:

  • Add fresh herbs like basil or parsley after taking the pizza toast out of the oven. This enhances the visual appeal and adds a burst of fresh flavor.

7. Get the Kids Involved:

  • If you're making pizza toast for a family snack, involve the kids in the process. They'll enjoy customizing their own toasts with their favorite toppings.

MAKE-AHEAD, STORAGE, AND REHEATING

MAKE-AHEAD: While best served fresh, you can prepare components in advance. Toast the bread, make the sauce, and have toppings ready. Assemble and bake just before serving.

STORAGE: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat in the oven for a few minutes to maintain the crispiness.

FREEZING: It's not recommended to freeze already assembled pizza toasts, as the texture may change upon thawing. However, you can freeze individual components like the homemade sauce for future use.

REHEATING: Reheat in the oven or in the microwave until warm.
